2019-20 Season Preview: Conard
2018-19 Record: 5-13-2
Tournament Result: Did not qualify
Head Coach: Steve Hetherman (1st season)
Key Returning Players: Owen Fernandez (F, Sr.), Will Macdonald (D, Sr.), Owen McGoldrick (F, Jr.), Colum Flaherty (F, Jr.), Brian Fehl (F, So.)
Impact Newcomers: Aidan Shaffer (Jr.)
Goalie Situation: Shea Henderson will certainly be missed. Henderson has been the backbone for the Chieftains over the past couple years. Senior Eli Wizevich will take over the goaltending duties this year.
Key Losses: Shea Henderson, Liam Lacroix (both to graduation)
Outlook: Things are quite dicey in Chieftain land with the exit of second year coach and former DII Coach of the Year, Chris Tornaquindici. Steve Hetherman, formerly of ND-Fairfield, has taken over the job that must come with a learning curve in terms of getting to know the bodies you have. The Chieftains, a year after reaching the DII semis failed to qualify for the DII tournament last year and have graduated their rock solid netminder Shea Henderson. There are some pieces left up front that gives Conard hope for a bounce back campaign. Senior Owen Fernandez returns as does juniors Owen McGoldrick and Colum Flaherty. Look for sophomore Brian Fehl to contribute as well. The Chieftains are excited to welcome back junior Aidan Shaffer after not playing last year. With a new coach, sometimes a new, fresh start can be a good thing. Look for Conard to incrementally improve from last year’s five win season, but there don’t appear to be enough pieces at the onset for a DII title push.
