East Haven Co-op Yellow Jackets
2018-19 Record: 8-10-2
Tournament Result: As 17-seed lost in the Division II First Round to 1-seed Watertown-Pomperaug 5-3
Head Coach: Lou Pane (34th season)
Key Returning Players: Alec Spiers (F, Sr.), Cory Benni (F, Jr.), David Amatruda (F, Jr.), Rocco Plano (D, Jr.), Logan Hamilton (G, Sr.)
Impact Newcomers: Cormac Kline (D)
Goalie Situation: In a season most Yellow Jacket fans would probably like to remember, then junior Logan Hamilton was great. Hamilton backed the Easties to the tune of a .940 save percentage continually keeping East Haven in games that they were undermanned. It’s his senior year, it’s his crease. Backing up Hamilton this year will be sophomores Ryan Sheldon, Ethan Roach and Ryan Wyrebek-Brasky.
Key Losses: Chris Giglietti, Ryan Egan (both to graduation)
Outlook: As predicted, depth was a major issue for the Yellow Jackets last year and while senior goalie Logan Hamilton was great in net, it simply wasn’t enough and the Easties mounted an eight win season and a first round exit after winning a qualifying round game against Trumbull. Numbers have been a problem and they’re a bit better this year but consistent performance has plagued a proud East Haven program for years now. They had a brief look at glory during the 2016-17 season, a year where they went 17-3 but even then, were bounced in the second round by 9-seed South Windsor. Removing that year and East Haven is 30-43-7 over the remaining four since dropping down to DII. Hamilton will give them a fighting chance in every game, but I don’t see much from a personnel perspective to see them doing much better than last year. Senior Alec Spiers is back, a kid who can light it up every night. Junior Cory Benni is solid and we loved junior David Amatruda last year. On D, junior Rocco Plano has a lot on his plate but should be getting some help from transfer junior defenseman Cormac Kline. Overall, the Easties will battle and surprise from time to time. With some of the other offensive powers returning at the DII level, it’ll be hard for them to keep up.
