2020-21 Season Preview: Cheshire Rams
Updated: Feb 6
2019-20 Record: 8-10-2
Head Coach: Anthony Giusto (6th season)
Key Returning Players: Nik Vasiljevs (F, Sr.), Thor Novicelli (F, Sr.), Aidan Gaudet (F, Sr.), Gabe Magriz (D, So.), Mike Donato (D, Sr.), Cullen Wiley (D, Sr.)
Impact Newcomers: Evan Vasiljevs (F, Fr.), Ryan Fraser (D, Fr.), Rocco Ocone Krause (F, So.)
Goalie Situation: Giant pads to fill for the Rams this year after All-Everything goalie Nick Maringola graduated. Juniors Amaan Chaudhry and Evan Cille are both vying for the starting job. Early reports have Chaudhry slightly ahead, but Giusto is likely to ride the hot hand.
Key Losses: Nick Maringola, Lucca Soderlund (both to graduation)
Outlook: What was Cheshire’s strength in recent years, their defense, is certainly an area where they’ll need work. But on the offensive end, a side of the ice where Cheshire was rather pedestrian over the years, the Rams look experienced and ready to put the puck in the net. The Rams return senior forward Niklas Vasiljevs (13 G, 11 A, 24 Pts), who’s coming off a season where he led Cheshire in scoring. Seniors Thor Novicelli (7 G, 8 A, 15 Pts) and Aidan Gaudet (7 G, 13 A, 20 Pts) are both coming off solid junior seasons as well and look to be quite the trio heading into this year. Add on the fact that we’re going to have to spell Vasiljevs for another four years because freshman Evan is joining the Rams and looks to contribute right away at forward. It’s the back-end that is cause for some alarm for 6th year Head Coach Anthony Giusto. Here, he has the daunting task of finding a replacement for one of the state’s best goalies in recent memory, Nicky Maringola, our 2019-20 Division II Goalie of the Year. Juniors Amaan Chaudhry and Evan Cille will be given every opportunity to earn that spot. With their top four scorers from a year ago returning, Cheshire will look a lot different than in years past. But will they be able to keep the puck out? It’ll be fun to find out.
