2020-21 Season Preview: Conard Chieftains
2019-20 Record: 2-17-1 (Division II)
Head Coach: Jason Olson (2nd season)
Key Returning Players: Owen McGoldrick (F, Sr.), Colum Flaherty (F, Sr.), Brian Fehl (F, Jr.), Jacob Caron (D, Sr.), Aidan Shaffer (F, Sr.), Graydon Selstad (G, Jr.)
Impact Newcomers: TBD
Goalie Situation: With Eli Wizevich graduating, junior Graydon Selstad moves into the No. 1 spot. Selstad saw a decent amount of playing time last season alongside of Wizevich.
Key Losses: Owen Fernandez, Will MacDonald, Alex Barnard (all to graduation)
Outlook: Conard has had a rough couple of years. Over that span, the Chieftains have gone (7-30-3) and failed to make the Division II tournament both years. The corresponding move has them dropping down to Division III where I think they’ll see more success. Losing Owen Fernandez, their leading scorer from a year ago stings, but senior captain Owen McGoldrick (9 G, 10 A, 19 Pts) is coming off a nice season of his own and he’ll be leaned upon heavily for Conard this year upfront. His sidekicks will include promising forwards like seniors Colum Flaherty and Aidan Shaffer and junior Brian Fehl. Senior Jacob Caron will attempt to hold down a thin back-end where he will likely need to log big-time minutes. In net, Eli Wizevich has graduated, promoting junior Graydon Selstad to the top dog all by himself. One thing seniors on this group are excited about is the opportunity to play rink neighbor Hall-Southington, something they haven’t done since their freshman year. Conard joins a large group in the CCC South this year playing a full DIII schedule.
