2020-21 Season Preview: EO Smith-Tolland Bucks
2019-20 Record: 6-13-1 (Division II)
Head Coach: John Hodgson (16th season)
Key Returning Players: Bryan Roy (F, Sr.), Cameron Sterling (F, Jr.), Keegan Hodgkinson (F, Jr.), Ethan Homiski (D, Sr.)
Impact Newcomers: Dan Polgun (G, Jr.), Quentin Wry (Jr.), Zack Stoldenburg
Goalie Situation: Dan Polgun will be the new netminder for the Bucks this year. A junior from Tolland, Polgun will take over for the graduated Harrison Cook and Matt Schoen.
Key Losses: Harrison Cook, Matt Schoen, Matt Abery, Brady McNulty (all to graduation)
Outlook: Like Conard, EO Smith-Tolland has returned to the Division III ranks for the first time since they won the DIII title in 2015. The Bucks return arguably the most prolific goal scorer at the DIII level this year in Bryan Roy (27 G, 8 A, 35 Pts). He’s a matchup problem every time he steps on the ice. He’ll be joined by juniors Cameron Sterling and Keegan Hodgkinson upfront. On the back-end, senior Ethan Homiski is as solid as they come on the blue line. In net, the Bucks will turn to junior Dan Polgun who is a newbie and will try to replace the loss of both Harrison Cook and Matt Schoen. The Bucks went out and grabbed a pair of games with South Windsor, playing above their DIII paygrade, which could benefit come postseason time but it also makes sense as they are playing out of South Windsor Arena this year. I don’t really know what to expect of the Bucks this year. I think Roy is going to have his way with many DIII defenses but I just wonder if there are enough complementary pieces around him. Time will tell.
