2020-21 Season Preview: Greenwich Cardinals
2019-20 Record: 13-6-1
Head Coach: Jack Duffy (1st season)
Key Returning Players: Thatcher Danielson (F, Sr.), Jack Hutchins (F, Sr.), Sean Duffy (F, Sr.), Jake Shreders (F, Sr.), Wes Zolin (F, Jr.), Ivan Kovalev (F, Jr.), Liam Mathews (F, Jr.), Ben Bates (D, Sr.), Chris Cataldo (D, Sr.), Charlie Zolin (G, Jr.)
Impact Newcomers: TBD
Goalie Situation: Junior Charlie Zolin returns as one of the best goalies in the state. Zolin was drafted as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 American Quebec Major Junior Hockey League draft this offseason and will be given the bulk of the net time at Hamill with Ben Nash’s graduation. Look for fellow junior Jack Ryan to compete for playing time as well.
Key Losses: Ryan Columbo, Ben Nash, Michael Connerty, Jessie Jordan (all to graduation)
Outlook: Greenwich enters this season with a heavy heart after the unexpected passing of Head Coach Chris Rurak this past July. Rurak gave so much to the Greenwich hockey community and elevated not only the quality of play but also the product on and off the ice for Greenwich hockey players. Jack Duffy takes over after a couple years assisting Rurak. Duffy, a former Yale Bulldog and professional hockey player, brings a stellar knowledge of the game and approach to his new position. The Cardinals are among a group of extremely-talented FCIAC groups. Their depth at forward is a clear strength. Wes Zolin (12 G, 12 A, 24 Pts), Ivan Kovalev (11 G, 12 A, 23 Pts), and Jack Hutchins (14 G, 8 A, 22 Pts) all return after double-digit goal outputs last season. Add on a strong blue line with guys like Ben Bates and Chris Cataldo, and an excellent goalie in Charlie Zolin, and Greenwich is a title contender even in a year where Darien and New Canaan are loaded.
