2020-21 Season Preview: Masuk Panthers

Conference: SCC/SWC

2019-20 Record: 7-13-0

Head Coach: Andy Townsend (1st season back, previously coached at Masuk for 13 years)

Key Returning Players: Drew Scalia (F, So.), Will Brakeman (F, Sr.), Ryan Squibb (F, Sr.), AJ Michetti (F, So.), Michael Domenichelli (D, Sr.)

Impact Newcomers: TBD

Goalie Situation: Junior Tory Beck inherits the starting spot for Masuk after appearing in three games last season backing up senior Evan LaGuardia. The crease is Beck’s to lose this season.

Key Losses: Kyle Cirillo, Evan LaGuardia, Michael Bunovsky, Connor Scalia, George Takacs, Ross Beck (all to graduation)

Outlook: Andy Townsend has returned as Masuk’s bench boss in what became a weird coaching carousel. All around good dude Andrew Sinibaldi resigned at the end of last season after a couple of years with the Panthers. Originally, assistant coach Zack Vidmosko was hired but then he stepped down prior to coaching a game and now Townsend is back manning a familiar bench. Got that? Good. On the ice, Masuk returns sophomore Drew Scalia (10 G, 9 A, 19 Pts), their second-leading scorer from a year ago, and CTHSHockey Division III Freshman of the Year. Sophomore AJ Michetti (5 G, 5 A, 10 Pts) is coming off a solid freshman year as well, landing him third on the team in points. Senior Ryan Squibb (5 G, 4 A, 9 Pts) and senior Will Brakeman (3 G, 3 A, 6 Pts) will look to add some veteran leadership behind the flashy underclassmen. Masuk did lose leading scorer Kyle Cirillo to graduation and will need junior Tory Beck to learn on the job quickly after not seeing much crease time last season. Masuk will be playing a manageable SCC/SWC DIII schedule and with Scalia and Michetti a year older, I think we’ll see more offensive production from the Panthers this year.
