2020-21 Season Preview: Milford Co-op Mariners
2019-20 Record: 8-12-0
Head Coach: Kenny Mitchell (3rd season)
Key Returning Players: Luca Ubaldi (D, Jr.), Kyle Kosh (F, Sr.), Kevin Wokanovicz (D, Jr.), Derek Ouellette (G, Sr.)
Impact Newcomers: Matt Wright (F, So.)
Goalie Situation: Senior Derek Ouellette split time last season with, then senior Al Bolduc. It’s Ouellette’s turn to grab the reins and not let go. Junior Max Howland will be there to serve as a back up if Ouellette falters or needs to be spelled.
Key Losses: Matt Gilebbi, Evan White, Rich Carino, Brett Pisani (all to graduation)
Outlook: When you look at an 8-12 mark to end a season and a first-round exit in the state tournament, normally it wouldn’t inspire much confidence. But that couldn’t be less the case here. For years, Milford was having trouble even making the tournament. Last year’s performance was Milford’s best since 2014-15 and that first exit came in the form of a 2-1 hard-fought loss to a really good Norwalk-McMahon team. Long story short, third-year Head Coach Kenny Mitchell has this program moving in the right direction and he looks to build off last season’s success. “We are looking to improve and use last year’s state and SCC playoff losses as some fuel for this upcoming season,” Mitchell told CTHSHockey. It won’t be entirely easy, however, with the loss of talented forward Matt Gilebbi to graduation. Senior Kyle Kosh is one forward who we predict will have a big season for the newly named Mariners. Newcomer, sophomore Matt Wright is going to be looked upon to contribute right away as well. Milford's defense could be a strength for the co-op as well with juniors Luca Ubaldi and Kevin Wokanovicz holding down the fort. Senior Derek Ouellette will serve as a dependable netminder for the Mariners this year as well. The pieces are there for Milford to have a quality season but role guys will need to definitely emerge as key contributors for that to happen.
