2020-21 Season Preview: New Canaan Rams
Updated: Feb 2
2019-20 Record: 17-2-1
Head Coach: Clark Jones (4th season)
Key Returning Players: Boden Gamill (F, Sr.), Griffin Deane (F, Sr.), Carter Ellis (F, Sr.), Shane Mettler (D, So.), Beau Johnson (G, So.)
Impact Newcomers: Cam Wietfeldt (D, So.), Doster Crowell (F, Fr.), Mason Pickering (G, Fr.),
Goalie Situation: The Rams are a bit spoiled in this category. Beau Johnson is coming off an insane freshman year that saw him earn 2nd Team All FCIAC, FCIAC tourney MVP, and 2nd team All-State. Normally, that would mean he never comes off the ice, but New Canaan has a freshman in Mason Pickering that could seriously push for ice time. We’ll classify this one as a good problem to have.
Key Losses: Justin Wietfeldt, Bennet Ong, Eric Wills (all to graduation), Alex Sotirhos (Deerfield), Nick Megdanis (Taft)
Outlook: Normally in a year where you see talents like Nick Megdanis and Alex Sotirhos leave early for the prep ranks, you’d worry about depth and where future scoring will come from. Luckily for 4th-year Head Coach Clark Jones and the rest of Ram Nation, there’s plenty more talent still inhabiting the New Canaan locker room. The Rams return 13 forwards, 4 defensemen, and FCIAC tournament MVP, All-FCIAC, and All-State goaltender Beau Johnson. Up front, the trio of seniors Boden Gamill (13 G, 9 A, 22 Pts), Griffin Deane (11 G, 12 A, 23 Pts), and Carter Ellis (12 G, 7 A, 19 Pts) will carry much of the workload for the Rams. Gamill was named to our Division I First Team last year and is an immediate Player of the Year candidate. Sophomore defenseman Shane Mettler (6 G, 11 A, 17 Pts) had an excellent first season and will look to make up for the loss of all-everything defenseman Justin Wietfeldt. Fans or no fans, there will be electricity in the Darien Ice House whenever this team takes the ice, especially when they’re pitted against their rinkmate Darien. In a year of loaded FCIAC groups, this is one that can challenge Darien and Greenwich to win the whole thing.
