2020-21 Season Preview: Notre Dame-West Haven Green Knights
2019-20 Record: 14-6-0
Head Coach: Larry Vieira (3rd season)
Key Returning Players: John D’Errico (F, Sr.), John-Michael Childs (F, Sr.), Zach Schroeder (D, Sr.), Bobby Allan (F, Sr.), Ryan Cannon (D, Sr.), Connor Smith (G, Sr.)
Impact Newcomers: TBD
Goalie Situation: All-Stater Connor Smith (2.10 GAA .940 SV%) is back for his senior season. He returns as one of the best goalies in the state. He will be Vieira’s rock back there and should have enough help in front to replicate another great campaign. He’ll be backed up by senior Daniel Kelly.
Key Losses: Joey D’Agostino, Chris Hughes, Jack Mascari, Robbie Goetze (all to graduation)
Outlook: Notre Dame-West Haven is coming off a year to remember and after not losing much to graduation and boasting a roster of 15 seniors, it’s a big year for the Green Knights and third year bench boss Larry Vieira. I’m confident in saying that the Green Knights will be at the top of the heap or thereabouts for most of this season. They return arguably the state’s best goalie in senior Connor Smith in addition to a cast of forwards who can shine on any night. Senior John D’Errico (10 G, 5 A, 15 Pts) will look to build on what’s been an impressive stay at NDWH. He, alongside guys like seniors John-Michael Childs and Bobby Allan, will go out guns blazing in their senior seasons. All-stater senior Zach Schroeder (3 G, 12 A, 15 Pts) is back on the blue line for the Green Knights. He’ll be complemented by senior Ryan Cannon. Vieira is really emphasizing the idea to his players that this game is fleeting and being able to play this year truly is a blessing. “In a strange year and strange season we are just appreciating the chance to be on the ice. It’s funny how much you miss something when it’s gone,” Vieira told CTHSHockey. With the eventual turnover roster-wise after this season, you have to think there is one goal and one goal only for the Green Knights: play for whatever title they can get their hands on and soak in every moment while attempting to do that.
