2020-21 Season Preview: Trumbull Eagles
2019-20 Record: 10-9-1
Head Coach: Greg Maxey (24th season)
Key Returning Players: Jack McLean (F, Sr.), Owen Finnegan (F, Sr.), John Guerrera (F, Sr.), Josh Liebowitz (D, Sr.), Luca Minopoli (F, Jr.), Zach Jager (D, Jr.)
Impact Newcomers: Giancarlo Montanaro (F, So. NDWH), Nick Smagezc (F, Fr.), Andrew Cutter (So.),
Goalie Situation: Senior Grayson Chopskie and junior Adam Guttman will attempt to fill the shoes of the graduated All-stater netminder Alex Tsymbalyuk. Maxey has done a nice job getting his new netminders experience prior to their time in the sun. In fact, in games that they’ve played, these two haven’t lost.
Key Losses: Alex Tsymbalyuk, Marco Minopoli, Collin Mallozzi (all to graduation), Jack Cullen (South Kent)
Outlook: Weighing the importance of an All-state caliber goalie leaving vs. a ton of offense returning is kind of where I’m at with the Eagles this year. You simply can’t replicate Alex Tsymbalyuk in net, though senior Grayson Chopskie and junior Adam Guttman are quality replacements. But on the flip side, Trumbull returns their top two leading scorers in senior Owen Finnegan (13 G, 14 A, 27 Pts) and senior Jack McLean (13 G, 10 A, 23 Pts), as well as fellow senior John Guerrera, who is sure to contribute more on the offensive end this year. Junior Luca Minopoli is another forward to watch early on this year, as I think his game could be ready to be taken to the next level after missing 15 games last year. On the backend, senior Josh Liebowitz and junior Zach Jager will hold down the blue line. Trumbull is also the beneficiary this year of only playing two Division I opponents (St. Joseph & Fairfield Co-op). This should allow them to not get worn down as they may have in previous FCIAC seasons. For this reason, and the fact that I think McLean and Finnegan are really going to shine this year, I like Trumbull to win the FCIAC DII/DIII tier. Full disclosure, I’ve picked Trumbull to excel in the past. This time, I’m really, really picking them.
