Intro to the CCR Rankings

Don't think the CIAC point system is the best? Neither do I, so I've attempted to come up with a system that could be better. It's almost entirely math based where there isn't bias or opinions factored in, like there are for our Power 5 Rankings and GameTimeCT's rankings, amongst other lists you can find throughout the web.

A couple of things to know about the CCR Rankings:

  • Division I teams started with at least 1550 points

  • Division II teams started with at least 1500 points

  • Division III teams started with at least 1450 points

  • Additional preseason points were awarded to teams receiving preseason votes by coaches and media (100 total points per division were awarded); this replaces having to log the results from years and years of play; I know it's not perfect, but it gives a slight edge to teams that should be at least decent this year

  • The formula factors each team's points entering that matchup, who is home and who is away (even though some teams share rinks), the margin of victory and loss, and the weight of the game (regular season vs. postseason), and then awards or takes away points for that team's next matchup

  • I've designed ties to benefit the underdog, as in my opinion, good for the underdog for not losing and bad for the favorite for not winning (*based on some early ties, it barely changes how many points a team gets or loses by tying*)

  • Out-of-CT opponents are given either 1550, 1550, or 1450 points based on how the CIAC classifies them for their point system; I couldn't think of a better way to structure this conundrum otherwise too much bias would be included

  • The formula certainly favors large margins of victories or losses, which is why some teams might be higher or lower than you might think (ex. West Haven)

DISCLAIMER: You can interpret the rankings however you'd like. Do they say a team should be in a different division? Maybe. Do they say that one team is definitely better than another? Sure. Are they perfect? I have no idea, but they are here to review, analyze, banter about, criticize, etc. The math is the math. Enjoy 'em!
